  • [Ongoing] The EUPI research consortium is working with CentroGeo, a Mexican spatial data analysis research center, to share project results via CentroGeo’s interactive geospatial platform. In addition, a project fact sheet and social media content is being developed specifically for the EUPI funded work.
  • [Q3 2022] The updated scope and methodology will be shared for review and approval by the Steering Committee in a meeting planned for Q3, 2022, with the purpose of socializing and validating the scenarios and methodology of the project. In parallel, various consultations with national and local level coffee stakeholders are being conducted.
  • [April 2022] Additional individuals with expertise in the coffee sector and agroforestry were invited to join the TEEBAgriFood Mexico Steering Committee, giving the research consortium access to coffee production data. A unique Coffee Technical Committee was established to provide methodological advice to the EUPI funded coffee project.
  • [June 2022] A proposal for the scope and methodology of the project was reviewed by the technical committee. The research consortium has adopted their methodological recommendations.
  • [April 2021] The objectives and preliminary scope of the EUPI funded coffee project were introduced to the TEEBAgriFood Mexico Steering Committee in April 2021. During this meeting, various members of the Steering Committee expressed their interest in the study and their agreement with the suggested scope.
  • [February 2021] A detailed baseline assessment of the coffee sector and an assessment of the institutional and policy framework have been carried out. Based on the results of these assessments, the research consortium has identified trends within the coffee sector and has started modeling projections for the business-as-usual scenario.Based on their baseline analysis, the consortium proposed two relevant scenarios, which will be compared to the BAU scenario:
    1. Coffee production intensification;
    2. Promotion of differentiated specialty coffee (based on quality and/or sustainability certifications).
  • [May 2020] A consortium led by INECOL (Ecological Institute) in collaboration with Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ecosur (linked to the coffee research group GIEZCA), Universidad Panamericana, Instituto de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias, Universidad Veracruzana and Centro GEO has been selected to carry out this study.
  • [February 2020] A Call for Proposals was launched for consortia to develop a research proposal outlining scenario analysis for the implementation of the project.

Scope of work

To analyze the main trade-offs in terms of environmental services, natural capital, and human well-being among the different land uses for coffee production in the regions of Veracruz, Chiapas, Puebla, and Oaxaca in Mexico. A full quantification of the value chain and an economic assessment of the expected impacts for biodiversity, ecosystem services and livelihoods of farmers and other social actors, as well as predicted changes in land cover, are expected.
